LUKE 17:28-36

Verses 28-36 “28Likewise also as it was in the days of Lot; they did eat, they drank, they bought, they sold, they planted, they builded;
29But the same day that Lot went out of Sodom it rained fire and brimstone from heaven, and destroyed them all.
30Even thus shall it be in the day when the Son of man is revealed.
31In that day, he which shall be upon the housetop, and his stuff in the house, let him not come down to take it away: and he that is in the field, let him likewise not return back.
32Remember Lot’s wife.
33Whosoever shall seek to save his life shall lose it; and whosoever shall lose his life shall preserve it.
34I tell you, in that night there shall be two men in one bed; the one shall be taken, and the other shall be left.
35Two women shall be grinding together; the one shall be taken, and the other left.
36Two men shall be in the field; the one shall be taken, and the other left.”
Many people have mistakenly believed that these verses refer to the rapture of the Church.  The rapture is a blessed hope, a purifying hope, and a sure and certain coming event that brings great comfort to believers.  The rapture is certainly taught in many other passages of Scripture, but it is no where in view in this passage.  Rather, these verses speak of the Coming of Christ in glory when He comes in power and great glory to judge the nations and to judge the Jews who have lived through the Great Tribulation.  There will be a great separation of the saved from the unsaved in that day.  It is that separation, not the rapture, which is in view here.

In the days of Lot, the vast majority of the people ignored the fact that judgment was coming.  They were oblivious to the danger.  So they lived their lives in their usual manner, eating, drinking, partying, and enjoying their worldly possessions.  But then judgment came.  Fire and brimstone consumed them and destroyed them.  Jesus said that is the way it will be when He returns to earth in power and great glory.  The earth’s population will not be ready!

“Remember Lot’s wife.”  As they were fleeing Sodom, she looked back because she loved Sodom and did not want to leave.  God was disgusted with her and turned her into a pillar of salt.  Remember Lot’s wife, and remember that she was a worldly person.  Remember that she was a believer who had contempt for the will of God.  Remember that God dealt with her according to her own deeds. Tribulation saints (not the Church, for the Church will have been raptured) are warned to be ready for the Revelation of Christ for it will be a time of judgment.

LUKE 17:22-25

Verses 22-25 “22And he said unto the disciples, The days will come, when ye shall desire to see one of the days of the Son of man, and ye shall not see it.
23And they shall say to you, See here; or, see there: go not after them, nor follow them.
24For as the lightning, that lighteneth out of the one part under heaven, shineth unto the other part under heaven; so shall also the Son of man be in his day.
25But first must he suffer many things, and be rejected of this generation.

The coming of Christ in glory to establish His kingdom will be sudden.  It will happen quickly, like a lightning bolt.  But the disciples would all suffer for the cause of Christ before He returned.  Most if not all of them, would be killed for the cause of the gospel.  They would long for those peaceful days when they followed Jesus through the hills and valleys of Judea.  There have been, and there will yet be, false christs.  But Jesus said do not go after those christs.  But first things first!  Jesus said that first He would have to suffer.  He would suffer in the Garden of Gethsemane.  He would suffer in the trials after He was arrested.  He would suffer when He was beaten.  He would suffer on the cross.  All of that suffering was for our sin.  He paid our sin debt.  And He suffered when He was rejected by His own people, the Jews.  The word “generation” in verse 25 refers to the Jewish people.
